Team Read

Improving reading skills, one student at a time

We partner with the Children's Reading Foundation of the Mid-Columbia to provide the Team Read program. Through Team Read, elementary students receive one-on-one reading tutoring by volunteers during school hours.

Volunteer just one hour a week

Community volunteers receive a brief training in the fall and are assigned to a school where they will volunteer twice per week for 30 minutes. Team Read is always in need of substitutes if a volunteer cannot make a regular weekly commitment.

During October through mid-May, volunteers are paired with first-, second- or third-graders who are specifically selected by their teachers. Students with behavior problems are not eligible for the program. Volunteers must be an approved district volunteer and are supervised by an on-site coordinator.

A typical 30-minute tutoring session includes:

  • The child and tutor reading to each other from provided books.
  • Practicing 100 assigned vocabulary words for a few minutes each session.
  • Providing the child special incentives, such as books and stickers.
